WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement regarding the bipartisan agreement on taxes between President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders:

"Unless Congress and the President act, a $3.8 trillion tax hike is set to take effect on January 1, 2011. This would be the largest tax increase in our country's history, and the average Nebraska family will see its federal income taxes skyrocket from $3,461 to $5,090 - an increase of $1,600.

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives pushed through an attempt to prevent only some of the $3.8 trillion tax increases slated to go into effect on January 1st. Smith joined with 167 Republicans and 20 Democrats in opposition to the legislation.

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) today announced his nomination of the following students to the U.S. Service Academies for the class entering the fall of 2011.

Thomas Blanton is a recent graduate of Alliance High School in Alliance. He has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

Adrian Smith (R-NE) today announced the American Red Cross will again deliver holiday cards to American military personnel, veterans, and their families across the country and around the world. Smith's offices in Scottsbluff and Grand Island will again serve as collection points for constituents to drop off postage free cards.

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), co-chair of the House Rural Veterans Caucus, today expressed his disappointment after learning the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) plans to close the VA clinic in Alliance. In August, Smith sent a letter to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki outlining his support for the Alliance clinic and urging the Secretary to take into account the circumstances facing veterans who live in rural areas.
