December 13, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement after a judge ruled the federal health care law unconstitutional. Today's ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson found Congress lacks the authority to impose the law's "individual mandate" which forces Americans to purchase individual health care or pay a penalty.

Smith has cosponsored legislation in the House of Representatives repealing the individual mandate and has signed an amicus brief in a similar suit filed by 20 other states (including Nebraska).

WASHINGTON, DC- Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-OH) today announced Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) has been named to the House Committee on Ways and Means. The committee has jurisdiction over Social Security and Medicare, tax and revenue legislation, and trade matters. Congressman Dave Camp (R-MI) was named chairman of the committee yesterday.

Subcommittee assignments will be made at a later date.

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), a member of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, today voted against a bill which would grant illegal immigrants - some of whom could be as old as 30 - legal status based on two years of military service or admittance to an institution of higher education.

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today voted against a $1.1 trillion funding act which wraps the 12 major spending bills Congress failed to pass this year into one massive bill.

The bill, which will fund government operations through next September, continues House Democrats' unsustainable spending policies and does nothing to curb the waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending. The bill also includes several unrelated provisions, most notably food safety legislation.

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement regarding the bipartisan agreement on taxes between President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders:

"Unless Congress and the President act, a $3.8 trillion tax hike is set to take effect on January 1, 2011. This would be the largest tax increase in our country's history, and the average Nebraska family will see its federal income taxes skyrocket from $3,461 to $5,090 - an increase of $1,600.

Smith joined with 167 Republicans and 20 Democrats in opposition to the legislation.

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) today announced his nomination of the following students to the U.S. Service Academies for the class entering the fall of 2011.

Thomas Blanton is a recent graduate of Alliance High School in Alliance. He has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
