WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), an incoming member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, tonight voted for H.R. 4853, the Middle Class Tax Relief Act. The legislation avoids a $3.8 trillion tax increase on all Americans by providing a two-year extension of all current tax rates, as well as the 15 percent rate on capital gains and dividends.

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement after a judge ruled the federal health care law unconstitutional. Today's ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson found Congress lacks the authority to impose the law's "individual mandate" which forces Americans to purchase individual health care or pay a penalty.

The committee has jurisdiction over Social Security and Medicare, tax and revenue legislation, and trade matters. Congressman Dave Camp (R-MI) was named chairman of the committee yesterday.
