Washington, DC – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) issued the following statement today marking the eleventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001:
“The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 mark one of the worst days in American history. As we honor the victims and continue to pray for their families, we also remember the hope, unity, and sense of purpose which brought us together as a nation. In our darkest hour we found our greatest strength.
Washington, DC – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) issued the following statement commemorating Independence Day:
“The Fourth of July marks the declaration of our independence and the expression of ideas which have guided our Republic and inspired freedom around the world. As we celebrate Independence Day with friends and family, please remember not only those who established our freedom, but also those who fought and gave their lives to defend it throughout the last 236 years.”
This summer, a travelling memorial called “Remembering Our Fallen” will make its trek across Nebraska. This 60-foot long tribute to Heartland soldiers who have been killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is a poignant reminder of the high cost of freedom. This past Friday, I had the special honor of welcoming its arrival in Gothenburg, where it will be on display through May 31st at Stone Hearth Estates.
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), Co-Chair of the Rural Veterans Caucus, today sent a second letter to the Director of the VA Black Hills Health Care System, Stephen DiStasio, calling for the VA to allow more time to review a proposed reduction in services at their Hot Springs, SD facility.
Our military is the finest fighting force for freedom and security the world has ever known and every last one of them is a volunteer. When the call to arms was sounded, it was they who stepped forward and said, “Send me.” Nebraska is home to more than 150,000 veterans. These heroes have put everything at risk to defend our freedoms. Our troops risk life and limb and spend great lengths of time away from their families so the rest of us do not have to. In return for their service and sacrifice, we made a promise to take care of them and their families when they come home.
With the holidays upon us, the season brings with it an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the past year. Looking back over the course of the last twelve months, the pursuit of change has shaped events both here at home and across the globe. For the first time, the debate in Washington has shifted from “how much do we spend” to “how much do we cut.” We have ended our combat mission in Iraq and we have watched important world events unfold such as the Arab Spring. All of these changes have significance for our country as we head into the new year.
