The United States once again did not make the list of the top ten freest economies in the world, according to the 2016 Index of Economic Freedom just released by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal. Declining economic freedom cannot become the status quo for our great nation.

For generations, Americans have paid taxes into Social Security with the expectation the program will be there if they need it when they get older. Without reform, the Social Security Trust Fund will continue toward insolvency.

Washington, DC –Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today participated in a Ways and Means Committee hearing which examined tax fraud. The hearing also focused on whether the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) are doing enough to protect Social Security numbers to prevent and detect false returns.

On May 13, the Medicare and Social Security Trustees released their 2011 report, and the news was troubling. For the sixth straight year, the trustees warned the programs are on an unsustainable, insolvent path, and without swift attention will leave future generations with broken promises.
