In 2024, American households are spending more on all categories of energy compared to prices at the start of 2021. As virtually every industry requires energy, this affects nearly every aspect of our lives and businesses. In places like Nebraska’s Third District, the agriculture industry depends on energy sources to power machinery, facilitate irrigation, manufacture and transport inputs, and deliver products to market. Other energy intensive industries have been severely impacted by rising energy costs. Transportation services costs are up 38.5 percent.

With the summer growing and travel season upon us, the cost of energy is top-of-mind for many. Since President Biden took office, the Consumer Price Index shows prices have skyrocketed and stayed high as gasoline prices are up 55.5 percent, airfare is up 38.2 percent, and electricity is up 28.5 percent.

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), released the following statement after the Biden administration authorized the release of one million barrels of gasoline from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

"It seems obvious to say, but the Strategic Petroleum Reserve cannot be tapped without putting taxpayers on the hook to refill it. In 2014, President Obama famously said, “I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone,” telling the American people he didn’t care whether Congress had provided legislative authority for his favored policies—he would go it alone whenever he felt like it. Ten years later, Obama’s then-Vice President, now-President Joe Biden has been ruling in the same fashion daily. President Biden’s executive actions don’t just ignore congressional intent; they are expensive, unwise, and unworkable.
