Smith, Ways and Means Committee Tackle Tax Reform

January 20, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement after the House Committee on Ways and Means today launched the first hearing in a series focusing on fundamental tax reform. Today's hearing examined the economic and administrative burdens imposed on families, employers, and the economy by the current structure of the Federal income tax.

"Our tax code is increasingly complex and complicated. This trend does not serve the American taxpayer and only creates more confusion and uncertainty. It is past time for both sides to sit down at the table and make a serious effort to significantly reform our tax code for the better.

"American taxpayers and businesses spend 6.1 billion hours doing their taxes each year. The time and effort to comply with the 3.8 million-word tax code is a drain on our economy," Smith said.
