Smith Votes to Eliminate Obamacare’s Individual Mandate Tax for 2014

March 5, 2014

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today joined a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives in voting for H.R. 4118, the Suspending the Individual Mandate Penalty Law Equals (SIMPLE) Fairness Act to eliminate the individual mandate tax penalty under the Affordable Care Act for the remainder of the year.

“The President recently delayed enforcement of Obamacare’s employer mandate tax for large businesses through 2015, but individuals are still subject to the individual mandate tax this year,” said Congressman Smith. “It is not fair to threaten hardworking taxpayers with yet another tax increase if they do not purchase expensive insurance they may not need or want. The legislation passed by the House today simply extends the same flexibility to the American people, which the President has already given to large businesses.”

Congressman Smith is a cosponsor of H.R. 4118, the SIMPLE Fairness Act. The bill passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 250 to 160.
