Smith Urges Constituents to Express Views on Reduced Postal Hours Proposal
Broken Bow, NE – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today issued the following statement urging residents of Nebraska’s Third District to speak out on a Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) proposal to reduce costs by changing operating hours at more than 17,000 postal retail locations nationwide:
“The Postal Regulatory Commission is accepting comments from the public before making a decision on a proposal to change operating hours for most U.S. post offices. While the Commission needs to find ways to reduce costs for the postal service, it is important they know how these changes would affect rural Nebraskans and their businesses. I encourage all Nebraskans with concerns about the proposed changes to contact the commission and let their voice be heard.”
The PRC will accept informal comments from any interested person through Monday, June 18, 2012 via e-mail at PRC-PAGR@prc.gov or by phone at 202-789-6800. For more information please visit the Commission’s website at https://www.prc.gov.
Background:
Congressman Adrian Smith serves as the co-chairman of the Congressional Rural Caucus and has maintained the Postal Service must take decisive action to remain solvent, but it should not do so by arbitrarily cutting rural mail service.
Congressman Smith along with sixteen other Members of Congress sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi regarding the Postal Service targeting rural postal facilities as a means of addressing its massive budget shortfall on April 23, 2012.
