Smith Speaks on House Floor in Opposition to Anti-Sugar Amendment to Farm Bill

May 18, 2018

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), a member of the Committee on Ways and Means, spoke in opposition to an amendment to H.R.2 - Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, also known as the Farm Bill, which would eliminate support for U.S. sugar producers and expose them to unfair trade practices.

“American farmers like ours in Nebraska’s Third District produce more products more efficiently than any other country in the world, if allowed to compete on a level playing field,” Smith said from the floor of the House.

“The sugar program, long included in the Farm Bill, levels the playing field at little to no cost to the American taxpayer by defending our producers from unfair practices overseas. Allowing it to expire would make no sense.”
