Smith Responds to State of the Union Address

January 12, 2016

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s final State of the Union address.

"Although rich in tradition, the State of the Union address was used by the President to once again defend his failed policies at home and abroad. As terror attacks continue around the world, including one within our own borders only weeks ago, President Obama is abdicating his responsibility as Commander-in-Chief by failing to propose a comprehensive plan to defeat ISIS and refusing to address provocations by Iran and North Korea.

“President Obama spoke tonight about changing politics by working together, but his own legacy of unilateral executive action and bypassing both the American people and Congress to accomplish his agenda proves this is only empty rhetoric. He talked about the need to reduce red tape while his administration continues to impose endless economy-stifling regulations such as the Waters of the U.S. rule. Though the President believes his government-down approach is the answer, I strongly disagree and will keep pressing for solutions which encourage economic growth, preserve our constitutional rights, and keep our country safe.”
