Smith to Host Veterans History Project Training Workshop
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today announced his office will host a training workshop for constituents interested in volunteering to record veterans’ stories for the Library of Congress. The training session will be held on Thursday, November 17 at the Grand Island Public Library (211 North Washington Street, Grand Island). The session is scheduled to run from 5:30PM to 8:00PM CST.
“Our veterans offer a unique and invaluable window into our nation’s history though their experiences serving our country,” said Smith, who noted his interest in public service was sparked by his grandfather, a veteran. “Sadly, each day we lose approximately 1,000 World War II veterans along with a growing number of veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars. Without entering their stories and personal accounts into the historical record, valuable pieces of our nation’s history are lost to time. This is an important undertaking, and I encourage anyone who is interested to lend their support to preserve our veterans’ stories for generations to come.”
The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center was created to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans. The Project recruits Americans of all ages to interview veterans in their local communities.
All volunteers receive hands-on training from a professional folklorist on how to properly record oral history and how to collect memoirs, photos, and other documents.
To register for Smith’s session or to obtain more information on this or future sessions, interested parties are encouraged to call Smith’s Scottsbluff office at 308-633-6333 or visit his website at https://adriansmith.house.gov.
Smith serves as Chairman of the House Rural Veterans Caucus.
