Smith Demands Benghazi Terrorists Be Brought to Justice

March 13, 2014

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), along with 55 other members of the House of Representatives, wrote to President Obama to demand the Administration do more to bring justice to those responsible for the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi Libya. The attack killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.

“While the House of Representatives continues our thorough investigation of the Benghazi attack, the Administration must do more to ensure the terrorists are held accountable for their crimes,” said Congressman Smith. “More than a year and a half after the attack, the victims deserve justice and the American people deserve answers.”

Congressman Smith previously wrote Secretary of State John Kerry to find out why the State Department's Rewards for Justice program (RFJ) is not being used to offer a reward for the apprehension of perpetrators of the Benghazi terrorist attack.

RFJ offers monetary rewards for information which prevents terrorist attacks or captures those who have committed acts of terrorism. RFJ has proven effective, as demonstrated by the program's role in the arrest of Ramzi Yousef, the main perpetrator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

The House of Representatives is currently investigating the Benghazi attack through the Committees on Oversight and Government Reform, Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence. Congressman Smith strongly supports the House investigation of the Benghazi attack in order to examine the facts, seek the truth, and prevent future acts of terror against American citizens.

All declassified information and documents found during the House investigation to this point have been made public at https://gop.gov/benghazi.

Dear Mr. President:

March 11, 2014 marks a year-and-a-half since the September 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on the U.S. compounds in Benghazi, Libya that led to the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. To date, your Administration has failed to apprehend or bring to justice those associated with these attacks. It is disgraceful that those responsible remain at large.

You promised the families of the deceased and the American public to “bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.” Unfortunately, those who committed these murders remain at large. The United States of America cannot allow terrorists to kill its citizens with impunity, and it is long overdue that those responsible are held accountable.

We ask that you act immediately and use whatever necessary resources to find, arrest and bring to justice those responsible for these attacks.
