Smith Co-Introduces AIR Act for Nebraska Airports
Washington, D.C. –Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), released the following statement after co-leading introduction of the Airport Infrastructure Readiness Act. The bill was introduced by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), with Reps. Don Young (R-AK) and Hank Johnson (D-GA) as additional lead cosponsors.
Because federal Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funds are allocated to airports based on enplanement, reduced air travel has decreased the ability of airports – particularly in rural areas – to qualify for funding to address needed safety improvements.
"One of the many unforeseen problems the COVID-19 pandemic has created has been a hit to the air travel industry. However, Nebraska airports remain as critical as ever. Creating flexibility for this unprecedented and unforeseen event is a must so that we can continue enjoying the convenience of air travel for the long term."
This bill is a companion to legislation introduced in the Senate by Sen. Deb Fischer (S. 4162), which has been approved by the Senate Commerce Committee.
