Washington, D.C. - Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement after Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday requested the president's tax returns from the IRS.

Statement from Smith:

"I strongly oppose efforts by congressional Democrats to request and release President Trump's tax returns. While the Ways and Means Committee, on which I serve, has the authority to request individual returns, this action cannot be construed as part of any legitimate investigation and is therefore an abuse of power."

As you may know, I recently accepted the top Republican position on the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, which writes tax policy for Congress. It's quite an honor for me because my colleagues and I on this panel represent the first line of defense against higher taxes. As we prepare to join our families for Christmas, I am reminded of so many things we should be thankful for. This year will be our second Christmas with our young son, Zeke. Much of what I do in Washington is motivated by a desire to leave a healthy country for coming generations to inherit.

When I listen to former President Ronald Reagan's speeches, it is clear he was motivated by the same feelings. He always appealed for unity with a positive disposition, but he never shied away from directly addressing the American people.
