Youth Involvement in our Community

When I visit schools throughout Nebraska's Third District, I am always impressed with the passion our students have for learning and their interest in world events. This sense of curiosity mixed with a willingness to learn is a recipe for future success. Spurring this drive to succeed and getting the next generation ready to lead is a particular interest of mine. Through my office, I try to provide opportunities for the youth in our community to gain valuable experience and skills for their future.

My internship program offers a rewarding experience for young men and women in college to participate in the functions of a congressional office and experience the legislative process up close. Students may apply for an internship in my Washington, D.C., Grand Island, or Scottsbluff offices. On a typical day, Washington interns are responsible for attending hearings, assisting in legislative research and welcoming constituents to the Capitol. District interns assist staff in research and gain valuable experience aiding in constituent outreach. Applications are available and accepted year-round on my website, at adriansmith.house.gov/services/internships.

It is also important we hear from our youth – their questions, concerns, and especially ideas – as we address the many challenges facing our nation. I created the Third District Youth Advisory Council for high school juniors and seniors to express their opinions, thoughts, and concerns about local and federal issues throughout the school year. It is important for our kids to feel connected to their government, and to help nurture their desire to improve it. The Youth Advisory Council lasts for one academic year and requires active participation throughout the year. Those interested in joining the Third District Youth Advisory Council can go to my website at https://adriansmith.house.gov/services/youth-advisory-council. Applications will be accepted through June of 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year.

Getting involved in the community while still in school provides a vital voice for the younger generation. Students who take an active role in their community also inspire their peers to do the same. I always enjoy meeting the future leaders of our great state and it has been great to hear from my previous Youth Advisory Council members and interns in my office about their journey through life.

There are many ways to be active in the community. I welcome hearing from students of all ages and their ideas for our future. Active engagement is so important for shaping our future leaders and I am glad I can provide these opportunities for community involvement for our youth.
