Prepared to Help with Flooding Recovery
Since the beginning of June, the Missouri and Platte River systems which span across the Third District have flooded many of our neighbors' homes and businesses. Heavy precipitation throughout the spring season combined with melting snow from neighboring states created flooding conditions which will create a difficult road ahead.
While we cannot control the rain or spring thaw, we can work to control the quality and speed of our response. Local, state, and federal officials have worked diligently to organize relief efforts to ensure the safety of those affected and minimize damages. Their hard work has been impressive and valuable, but the recovery efforts will continue for months to come so we must continue providing necessary support and coordination.
On June 18, President Obama issued a federal emergency declaration for the 18 counties in Nebraska most impacted by the flooding to this point. I sent a letter to the President urging this declaration because the flooding is well beyond what state and local governments can handle.
Gathering accurate information is an important step for disaster and government officials. I have spent considerable time in recent weeks, and will continue to do so, touring the affected areas, meeting with local leaders, and discussing how the federal government can best assist with recovery efforts. I will continue to do all I can to make certain the federal government is playing an appropriate, helpful role in reaction to the flooding.
Additionally, my offices in Grand Island and Scottsbluff stand ready to assist individuals, families, and businesses who need help navigating the assistance available from government agencies or other relief resources. The Grand Island office can be reached at (308) 384-3900 and Scottsbluff office at (308) 633-6333. In addition, I have established a dedicated email address to hear from you: NE03flood@mail.house.gov. An effective response from government entities is critical to ensuring those affected can fully and quickly recover. While the images of the flooding and its damages are naturally difficult to view, the images of neighbors helping neighbors and communities pulling together in the face of adversity have been uplifting. Whether it is their job or not, people from all over the state have made an extraordinary effort to help their fellow citizens during this time of need. These actions remind us of the helpful, determined spirit of Nebraskans which make our state and its people unique. In the days and months to come, I will remain fully engaged to assist in any way I can in these difficult times. I am confident by working together we will fully recover as a stronger, more unified Nebraska.
