Washington, D.C. – Congressional Agriculture Trade Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Adrian Smith (R-NE), Jim Costa (D-CA), Dusty Johnson (R-SD), and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) led 109 colleagues in sending a letter to Ambassador Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, highlighting how the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) delivers for American agriculture.
While we have successfully enacted major legislation this year to protect our borders, cut taxes for families, and restore faith in government this year, opportunities abound for further progress to improve the lives of Nebraska families. Nowhere is that more clear than in the House Ways and Means Committee, where I serve. We continue to make progress across the issue areas within the committee’s jurisdiction, with key developments involving trade, health, and tax.
Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement upon publication of a Department of the Treasury report on suspending and replacing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Direct File tax filing program.
“IRS Direct File was an expensive, duplicative program which was never authorized or funded by Congress, and I want to express my appreciation to President Trump, Secretary Bessent, and CEO Bisignano for bringing this chapter to a close.
It is now nearly one month since the House passed its clean continuing resolution to keep open the federal government. On September 19, House Republicans did our job. We passed legislation which would have prevented—and still could immediately end—the shutdown. This funding bill has received bipartisan support in the Senate.
Washington, D.C. – This week, Reps. Adrian Smith (R-NE) and Burgess Owens (R-UT), Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Tim Scott (R-SC), and House Committee on Education and Workforce Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI), sent letters to the governors of all 50 U.S. states and the mayor of the District of Columbia. In the letters, the members called upon the governors to opt in to a new federal scholarship tax credit initiative, allowing students, parents, and scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) in their state to participate.
Federal spending and our growing national debt are serious challenges which must be addressed for the long-term fiscal health of our nation. By enacting our tax cut and family security package (H.R. 1) in July, Republicans took significant strides to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in federal programs such as Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The appropriations process provides another important opportunity to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly.
The transition from summer to fall is a busy time in the Cornhusker State. As farmers prepare for harvest and the new football and volleyball seasons arrive, parents and students are gearing up to go back to school and teachers are working hard for the start of a new semester. Young people across the Third District anticipate new opportunities as they take new steps in their educational journey.
Washington, DC — Today Representatives Adrian Smith (R-NE), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), and Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) announced the introduction of the bipartisan Critical Minerals Investment Tax Modernization Act. The legislation would expand tax relief to support production of certain critical minerals important to national and economic security.
Drafting a historic piece of legislation like the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, House Republicans spent months, and even years, identifying critical needs and developing the best product possible for hardworking American families. While the package is referred to as the One Big Beautiful Bill to emphasize the broad spectrum of policy achievements, including immigration, national security, and agriculture, a major driver of the bill is tax policy crafted by the Ways and Means Committee, on which I serve.
This week, during a roundtable hosted by Western Sugar Cooperative, I met with representatives across several agricultural sectors from the Third District. I am grateful each time I’m able to connect with and thank the dedicated producers at the origination of the supply chains stocking our grocery stores, pantries, restaurants, fuel pumps, and more. Gathering their insights on the challenges they face and the importance of ensuring our tax code and Farm Bill programs work for them is essential for my work in Congress to support economic growth in our state.
