Smith Statement on Updated IRS Withholding Tables

Jan 11, 2018 Issues: Economy, Taxes, Ways & Means

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement today after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued updated withholding tables for 2018, reflecting changes to the tax code due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act becoming law. Smith is a member of the Ways and Means Committee, which was the committee of jurisdiction for the tax code overhaul.

“Today’s release of the IRS’s updated withholding tables means Nebraskans can expect to see higher paychecks next month,” Smith said. “The goal of tax reform has always been to help Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.

“This reduction of the tax burden for individuals and families, along with more than 100 companies announcing bonuses, wage increases, and more robust benefits for employees, shows tax reform is already having significant, positive impacts on people’s lives. I’m encouraged this new tax code will enhance long-term economic growth.”

Employers are required to implement the new withholding tables by February 15, 2018, so employees will see changes in their February paychecks once employers adopt the new IRS guidance.
