Smith Statement on President Trump’s Rural Health Care Executive Order
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), released the following statement after President Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) addressing rural health and telehealth concerns. This EO creates new ways of financing for rural health, and extensions of emergency telehealth waivers previously limited to the COVID public health emergency.
Smith, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, has been a champion for rural health care since coming to Congress. He spoke with Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Eric Hargan shortly after the EO was issued to further discuss the topic, and possible next steps.
“This Executive Order is another great step in the right direction for rural health care. Rural health care’s challenges predate the pandemic and actions such as this could not come at a more crucial time. Technologies such as telehealth can provide access to high quality, affordable, and available heath care for rural Americans. I thank the President and his administration for their commitment to rural America – during a pandemic and beyond.”
