Smith Statement on Democrats’ Partisan Bills

August 24, 2021
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the below statement today opposing the Democrats’ resolution which enacted a budget authorizing $3.5 trillion government expansion while bypassing all opportunities for debate or amendment.

“Speaker Pelosi paved the way for Democrats to push through their multi-trillion-dollar social spending package today by using a procedural gimmick to deem their budget resolution passed. This is a clear last-ditch effort to ram it through in the least accountable fashion possible. This tactic shows how unpopular the resolution is with the Speaker’s own caucus, let alone the American people.

“Our ongoing inflation and workforce crises are a direct result of President Biden’s failed economic plan, and this budget doubles down on their failing agenda.

“Now more than ever, our priority in Congress must be empowering small businesses to reopen and hire workers, not penalize job creation, incentivize Americans to stay home, and continue to grow inflation. To say I am incredibly disappointed by Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats’ continued manipulation of the legislative process to cater to their own agenda is an understatement.”

Smith, a senior of the Ways and Means Committee and lead Republican on the Select Revenue Subcommittee, has been leading efforts to stop President Biden’s proposed tax increases, including provisions that would repeal stepped up basis and raise taxes on America’s small businesses as they struggle to reopen.
