Smith Responds to the State of the Union Address

Feb 13, 2013 Issues: Budget, Taxes

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement responding to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“The State of the Union is a great tradition, and an important opportunity for the President to share his vision with Congress and the American people.  However, President Obama seemed to double down on the same tax, spending, and regulatory policies which have failed to create adequate economic growth and which have added trillions of dollars to the national debt.  Rather than repeating the failed policies of the past, American taxpayers, families, and job creators need Washington to take a different approach.

“I am glad the President spoke about the need for tax reform.  However, tax reform should not be a money grab, but rather a comprehensive review and simplification of the entire code to make compliance easier and to encourage economic growth.  In addition, a balanced approach requires us to rein in spending, balance the budget, and begin to pay down our debt.

“I look forward to working toward meaningful spending reductions and removing government-imposed barriers to private sector growth.”
