Natural Resources Committee Convenes on Smith’s Northport Bill

Jun 11, 2014 Issues: Agriculture

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) discussed his legislation affecting the Northport Irrigation District at a Committee on Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water and Power hearing.  H.R. 4562 would provide repayment authority for members of the Northport Irrigation District under a dated Bureau of Reclamation contract.

Smith said during the hearing, “Allowing producers within the irrigation district to pay off their portion of the Bureau of Reclamation contract is a win-win: the government will receive funds otherwise uncollected, and landowners will be relieved of costly regulation and acreage limitations which threaten family-owned operations.”

Smith also introduced several Nebraskans including Kevin Hall, a member of the Northport Irrigation District, who testified on the need for Smith’s legislation.

The next step toward becoming law would be for H.R. 4562 to be passed by the Natural Resources Committee, before being considered by the full House of Representatives.
